What Is A Mini Dental Implant?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what mini dental implants are, how they differ from conventional implants, and why candidacy depends on your specific case.
People ask, “What is a mini dental implant? What do you mean by a mini dental implant?” It’s sort of a misnomer nowadays because it actually refers to what’s known as a one-piece dental implant. Originally, they were small-diameter implants, and that’s where the term “mini implant” came from. However, since those times, they have come in a variety of widths and styles that make them basically an alternative to a conventional implant.
What’s a conventional implant? A conventional implant is an implant using multiple parts; it’s not a one-piece implant, it’s usually three pieces. Whether or not you’re a candidate for the mini or one-piece dental implants depends on which teeth are being replaced, for the most part. With the molars (the chewing teeth), we tend to go with the larger conventional implants because they hold up better to stress. Other areas where you don’t have room for a bigger type of implant are the realm of the mini implant or the one-piece implant. So, it varies on the person and also the density of your bone; there are factors we’d have to look into. Once again, if you’re interested, a free consultation is all you need to do.
