Imagine a world where the most intricate and delicate machinery fits in the palm of your hand. This isn’t science fiction—it’s the reality of modern technology. From smartphones to nano-robots, we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with miniaturization. But what if we could apply this same principle to transform lives and restore smiles? With mini dental implant technology, we can. Mini implants are a testament to how thinking small can lead to big changes. Just as the first compact computers revolutionized the tech industry, mini dental implants have changed how we approach tooth replacement.
What Is a Mini Dental Implant?
If you need to replace a tooth, a dental implant is the most permanent solution with the best long-term oral health outcomes. It is essentially a titanium screw that replaces the missing root and supports a restoration like a denture, bridge, or crown. Replacing the missing root provides the necessary stimulation to the jawbone to keep it strong and healthy. This is crucial for long-term oral function. Mini dental implants and conventional dental implants perform this same function but differ in key ways.
One important distinction is in the name: a mini implant is smaller than a conventional implant. When we say this, we mean that a mini implant is slimmer. It’s less than 3 millimeters wide, while a conventional implant is over 3 millimeters.
The reduced diameter of a mini implant contributes to a procedure that is less complex, less time-consuming, less painful, and less expensive.
Dental Implant Components
Despite their name, mini dental implants are not just smaller versions of their traditional counterparts. A key distinction is that a mini dental implant is just one piece.
A conventional implant has multiple components:
- The implant body is the piece we embed in the jawbone.
- The abutment is the component that connects the restoration to the implant body.
- The screw is a small piece that secures the abutment to the implant body.
Mini implant technology streamlines the design of a conventional implant by merging the separate components into one piece. So, what does a mini implant look like? It’s a thinner screw with a ball-shaped abutment built into the post. This o-ball extends above the gumline and serves as the attachment point for the restoration. Thanks to this unique design, multiple surgical steps aren’t required to place a mini implant. As a result, we can place a mini implant in a single visit, reducing chair time and overall treatment costs.
Mini Implant Placement Procedure
The swift and gentle mini implant procedure is an important benefit for patients replacing their teeth with dental implants.
When we place a conventional implant, we need to drill a hole into the bone that is the entire length and width of the implant. We’ll create the hole by drilling a small hole and then continuing to make it bigger until it can accommodate the implant. Then, we’ll place the implant body into the hole, close it with stitches, and let it heal for four to six months. Once it has healed, we can open the gums back up, secure the abutment, and attach the restoration.
Placing a mini implant requires much less bone and gum tissue disruption. It requires much less space in the jaw, so the hole we create is much smaller. We also only drill half the depth of the implant. Once the hole is made, we’ll screw the implant into the bone to the proper depth (much like a self-tapping screw). This process creates a firm foundation and immediate integration of the implant with the bone.
With a mini implant, we can take an impression the same day that we place it instead of waiting months for the treatment area to heal. We’ll send the impressions to the dental lab, and in just a few weeks, we can secure your permanent custom restoration to the implant.
The simplicity, speed, and minimal discomfort of the mini implant placement process are significant advantages. It also makes them more affordable, as the reduced procedure time leads to lower overall costs.
