One-Piece Dental Implants: 5 Benefits Over Conventional Implants [Video Guide]

What happens when a dentist tells you conventional dental implants aren’t an option? That doesn’t necessarily mean implant treatment is out of reach. It may simply mean a different type of implant is a better fit. Conventional implants have strict space and bone requirements and require a more invasive placement procedure. But one-piece dental implants are designed and placed differently. As a result, Dr. Pearson can use one-piece implants to treat many patients who may have been previously told they weren’t good implant candidates.

When the clinical situation allows, Dr. Pearson tends to prefer one-piece dental implants. Why? It isn’t one reason. One-piece implants offer a cleaner hygiene profile, fit spaces where conventional implants are too large, require a less invasive placement, and cost less. As Dr. Pearson says, “Fewer parts, less cost, lower lab bill, less chair time, and less hassle for you equal a happy patient and a happy dentist.”

One-Piece Dental Implants vs. Conventional Dental Implants

The many benefits of one-piece implants begin with a simple difference: their design.

Physically, a conventional implant is three pieces. There’s the implant body that goes into the jawbone, an abutment or cap that connects above the gum line, and a small screw that holds them together. These implants also measure more than 3 mm in diameter.

One-piece dental implants integrate the separate parts into just one component.

You might hear dentists use the terms “one-piece dental implants” and “mini dental implants” interchangeably. That’s because one-piece implants were originally available only in mini diameters (less than 3 mm wide). Today, however, one-piece implants come in a range of widths, and mini implants are just one option. With today’s range of one-piece implant widths, Dr. Pearson has even more flexibility to match the implant to your needs.

Regardless of diameter, one-piece implants serve the same functions as conventional systems and, in several important ways, outperform them.

5 Benefits of One-Piece Dental Implants

Thanks to their unique construction, one-piece dental implants offer many advantages (and patients really love #5!).

1. Better Fit for Narrower Bone

One-piece implants come in smaller diameters, which means they don’t require the jawbone width that conventional implants do. For patients who have been told their jaw is too narrow for implants, this slimmer design can make treatment possible.

2. Lower Risk of Infection

Conventional implants are made of multiple pieces, and where the cap meets the implant body, there’s a small gap. Recent research, including a 2025 study, has shown that bacteria take up residence in that gap and can cause peri-implantitis, a serious infection of the tissue surrounding the implant that can lead to implant failure.

One-piece implants have no such gap, removing this opportunity for bacteria buildup. From a hygiene perspective, one-piece dental implants are the cleaner design.

3. Safer Placement Technique

Placing a conventional implant requires drilling a full-length hole into the jawbone. However, when we use a one-piece implant, we only need to drill half the length of the implant. That’s because the implant self-guides the rest of the way in. Why is that important?

The reason comes down to anatomy. The nerves that run through your lower jaw and the floor of your sinus cavity sit at a fixed depth within the bone. The deeper the drill goes, the closer it gets to those structures. With a full-length hole, the margin for error is narrow. With half-depth drilling, we’re working in safer territory from the start.

The decision to use a one-piece implant is a safety decision as much as anything else. The nerves in your jaw are structures that, when damaged, may not fully recover. Permanent nerve damage can mean numbness, tingling, or altered sensation in your jaw, lip, or chin that stays with you. Perforating the sinus floor carries its own risks: it can lead to sinusitis or other complications that may require additional treatment. These are the things Dr. Pearson looks out for on your behalf.

The half-depth drilling and self-guiding design of our one-piece implants significantly reduces the likelihood of either outcome. And in the rare case where the implant does make contact with a nerve during placement, the self-guiding mechanism tends to push the nerve aside rather than cut through it. For Dr. Pearson, that’s a good reason to choose one-piece dental implants.

4. Faster Path to Your Permanent Tooth

When we’re placing a one-piece implant into healed bone—which is the case if you’ve been missing a tooth for a while or you’re fully healed after an extraction—we can place the implant, take an impression, and give you a temporary tooth on the same day. Because the implants are so gentle on the gums and bone, and because they’re very stable as soon as we place them, you can leave with your visit with a complete smile.

Then, in about two weeks, you’ll return to have your custom tooth secured.

The same process with a conventional implant typically takes four to six months. For many of our patients, that timeline just isn’t preferred.

5. Lower Treatment Costs

We often think that the more features and benefits something has, the more expensive it has to be. Luckily, that’s not the case with mini and one-piece implants.

Since they have fewer parts and use a less invasive placement technique, you can look forward to a smaller lab bill, less time in the chair, and a lower total cost than conventional implants. That’s an advantage that our patients tend to really enjoy!
