When Is a Root Canal Needed?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains when root canal therapy becomes necessary and how the procedure can save a damaged tooth while relieving pain.
A “root canal” is actually a misnomer; the procedure is technically root canal therapy. Every tooth has a root canal, but therapy is needed when the tissue inside dies or becomes inflamed, causing a toothache.
The procedure removes the inflamed tissue and the nerve from inside the tooth, allowing you to get rid of the pain while keeping the tooth. Root canal therapy is necessary if we determine a toothache is originating from a specific tooth or if a radiographic exam reveals a chronic abscess or growth in the jawbone caused by dead tissue inside the canal.
