What Is a CBCT Scan and Why Does My Dentist Need One?

In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what a CBCT scan is and why three-dimensional imaging plays such an important role in implant planning and safety.

Some people have heard of and wonder what a CBCT is. It’s basically a dental CAT scan, and it stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It allows us to look at your jaws in three dimensions, with three different views of sectioning and cross-sections, so we can actually traverse the jaw visually from side, front, and back angles.

This greatly aids us in being able to tell how much bone you have for implants, the position of nerves and vital structures that are to be avoided, and also aids in something called drill guides, which mark the spot and angulation for the holes we use, steering clear of any danger areas. It’s a neat machine; I got mine about six years ago and couldn’t live without it.
