Do You Offer Sedation Dentistry?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what mini dental implants are and how they differ from traditional implants in size, placement protocol, and cost.
People ask about sedation dentistry, whether we offer it, and what it is. There are two different kinds. There is IV sedation, which I do not offer, as it requires advanced training and usually requires an anesthetist or nurse anesthetist to administer it. It is not practical in my practice setting.
I do, however, offer oral sedation. These are just pills that you take, starting with Valium the night before. We then administer other types of benzodiazepines, such as lorazepam and others, depending on the length of the procedure. We may also use something called hydroxyzine if you gag.
We customize the sedation for you, which is a separate procedure. We will evaluate you for it. I usually perform sedation dentistry with vital sign monitoring on Wednesdays; that is our sedation day. It works quite nicely and helps people, even those who aren’t anxious, to be more comfortable with lengthy procedures. Some of the longer procedures may go on for several hours, and sedation helps a lot with that. So yes, we do offer it.
