Why Should Missing Teeth Be Replaced?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains the negative effects that come when patients avoid replacing missing teeth.
You might ask, “Doctor, why is it important to replace missing teeth?” Replacing a wisdom tooth, or sometimes the second molar (the teeth way in the back), is not always necessary.
However, most of the time, it is. Once a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth tend to shift. They do not stay in place. They move around. This causes changes in your bite, which can lead to temporomandibular joint problems. It can also cause your chewing forces to be directed at odd angles to the rest of the teeth, causing them to loosen and the subsequent loss of even more teeth. And that’s not to mention cosmetics and chewing efficiency.
So whenever possible, we like to replace missing teeth because it’s better for our patients.
