What Is an Intraoral Scanner?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what mini dental implants are and how they differ from traditional implants in size, placement protocol, and cost.
A new device in my office is something called an intraoral scanner. What it does is it gets an impression of your jaw and your teeth: a digital dental impression. It takes the place of traditional dental impressions, and it does so with a wand, a light wand. It goes in your mouth and scans your teeth, your mouth, and adjoining structures with light rays. Then, it sends an electric signal to a laboratory that transforms those signals into a model of your teeth. Pretty cool stuff.
It eliminates the traditional impression and gives the laboratory immediate access to start working on your case, which decreases the amount of time between the scanning and when you get your real tooth. We cut out at least a week of downtime that way, so you get your teeth faster. Pretty cool stuff.
