How Is TMJ Disorder Treated?

In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains how TMJ disorder is commonly treated and why relaxing the jaw muscles is an important part of relief.

I treat temporomandibular joint disorder in my office with a simple, cost-effective nightguard. It is simply like putting your wrist in a little splint if you sprained it; that is what these things are called. They are called temporomandibular splints or mouth splints, and they just allow your jaw to go where it wants to be in the most comfortable, relaxed position, so it cannot be overworked.

When a muscle gets overworked, it becomes spastic, and that is what causes the clicking in your jaw joint. Instead of the muscles contracting smoothly, they get jumpy, and that pulls the jaw past the little cartilage disk in your jaw joint, which then snaps or pops. We want those muscles to relax and be non-spastic, smooth, and comfortable.
