What Does a Bite Guard Do?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what mini dental implants are and how they differ from traditional implants in size, placement protocol, and cost.
There’s another form of a splint called a bite guard. Essentially, it is the same thing as the TMJ splint. What a bite guard does is protect your teeth in case you grind on them at night, and it distributes the stress of your chewing and clenching over a broader area. Think of a snowshoe effect in snow. It dissipates that force so that a powerful, crunching bite doesn’t wreck your dental work or your natural teeth. It’s something I insist on if you have a bruxing habit and want to get implants, veneers, or anything of that type, because they’re no match for a bruxer.
