What Are Mini Dental Implants?
Mini dental implants are titanium posts that we anchor in your jawbone to replace missing tooth roots.

Mini implants, in particular, are smaller than other implants and fit into smaller areas of bone. While many patients may not be eligible for traditional implants after bone loss, mini implants can put implant treatment back on the table!
However, it’s important to note that not everyone is eligible for mini implants either. Patients with softer bone may benefit more from traditional implants. But whenever possible, we prefer to use mini-implant treatment for the benefit of our patients.
Additionally, mini implants have a one-piece design, making them easier to place. Rather than worrying about multiple appointments and surgeries, we place mini implants in a single appointment.
Minimally Invasive Dental Implants: The Process
The mini dental implant process is simple and minimally invasive.
- Free Consultation: At St. Apollonia Dental, we begin our treatments with a free consultation. There, we determine if you’re eligible for implant treatment. We’ll discuss your medical history, conditions that may affect your eligibility (such as diabetes), and your preferences.
- Dental CAT Scan: After your consultation, we’ll take a 3D digital X-ray of your smile to assess the quality of your jawbone. With this information, we will determine if you’re eligible for dental implant treatment and create a treatment plan for your smile.
- Implant Placement: Your procedural appointment is straightforward, and the implant placement will take only a few minutes. Because mini implants are minimally invasive, we simply make a small pilot hole through your gums and into your bone. Then, we gently screw the implant into place, where it immediately begins to stabilize. Before we send you home, we’ll take one final X-ray to make sure everything looks good and supply you with a temporary restoration.
- Final Restoration: After a short healing period, your implant will be stable enough to support a final crown, bridge, or denture. We will remove your temporary restoration and replace it with the final one, permanently restoring your smile!
Do Minimally Invasive Dental Implants Hurt?
Dental implant treatment, like any oral surgery, can seem invasive and painful. But mini dental implants are minimally invasive, which makes them much less painful than patients think.
The night or morning after implant treatment, we like to call our patients to check on them and their healing. In most cases, we find that patients experience minimal discomfort that is easily taken care of with over-the-counter pain medications like Aspirin or Tylenol. And in most cases, any discomfort fades after a day or two.
Because mini dental implant treatment is so gentle, it doesn’t disturb the surrounding tissue as much. In contrast with traditional implant treatment, minimally invasive dental implants are like a walk in the park!
In general, mini implants are one of the least painful procedures we perform here at St. Apollonia Dental.
