Are Dental Implants Safe?

In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson discusses the safety of dental implants, including why mini implants may reduce certain risks during placement.

Are dental implants safe? Yes. They’re made of an inert metal, titanium, which is the same material used in artificial knees and hips, so they are very well tolerated by the body.

With the placement of the implant, there are certain risks involved. The risks are low, but there are nerves and other anatomical structures that we have to avoid.

Especially with mini implants, those risks are almost completely reduced by the fact that we don’t drill full-length holes. Even if we were to misjudge the length and contact a nerve directly, the nerve would typically be moved out of the way rather than cut, as could happen with full-length drilling.
