What Is Periodontal Disease?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what periodontal disease is and how bacteria can gradually destroy the structures supporting your teeth.
I am sure almost everybody has heard of periodontal or gum disease. What is it exactly? It is the destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. The teeth are affixed to your jawbone via a ligament, like a sock around the root of the tooth that binds the tooth to the jawbone. Certain bacteria destroy that ligament. As they destroy it, they also destroy the supporting bone, resulting in loose teeth and eventually the need to have them extracted.
