Can a Tooth Extraction and Dental Implant Be Done the Same Day?

In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains when a tooth extraction and dental implant can be completed on the same day and what tradeoffs patients should consider.

Can I get the implant put in the same day that my tooth is taken out? The answer is yes and no. In most cases, we can put a small-diameter implant alongside the socket of the tooth and put a temporary crown on there as the socket heals, so you never have to walk around without a tooth.

There are some risks, and the success rate can go down slightly because the implant usually isn’t fully embedded in bone. However, we still do this with a high degree of success. Ideally, I prefer to put them in a healed bone site so the chewing force is directed straight down the implant, making it last longer. If we do place an implant the same day as an extraction, there is a three-month healing period to allow the gum tissue to mature properly and avoid unsightly gaps.

If you or someone you love is struggling with missing teeth or loose dentures, contact Dr. Charles Pearson at St. Apollonia Dental in Sterling Heights, MI, for a free consultation to learn how our dental implant treatments can enhance your smile, improve your function, and restore your self-confidence.
