Does Getting an Implant Denture Hurt?
In this video, Dr. Charles Pearson explains what patients typically experience during implant denture treatment and how sedation may help during longer procedures.
“Dr. Pearson, does this hurt? You know, when you put these implants in, and I get a denture on top of that?”
To put implants into a healed site where no teeth are present, and no extractions are required, the pain is very minimal. Again, there are no nerve endings in your jawbone. The only actual tissue damage is a small puncture, 1.2 millimeters in diameter, that we use for a pilot hole. You get a few little pokes, and that is the extent of the pain.
If there are teeth that we have to extract before we place the implants, then you will have the normal pain associated with an extraction. If you are wearing a denture, you have likely experienced that. I should mention that some of these procedures, especially “roundhouses” involving implant placement in conjunction with extractions, can be long appointments. For that reason, I have completed continuing education and certification in oral sedation, which we do chairside here.
These are safe benzodiazepines, in the Valium family, that help you relax. We monitor your vital signs while you are under sedation. It is completely safe and can make a situation where a patient has to hold their mouth open for an hour or more much more relaxed and tolerable. In many cases, patients don’t even remember what happened. We use that quite regularly.
